How to play Anagramish

Anagramish is a daily five-letter word ladder with a twist: the letters can move around. Connect the blue start word to the orange end word, changing one letter at each step.

New to the game? Open Anagramish and choose Learn to play for three short, untimed lessons.

The rules

  1. Make a valid five-letter word by replacing exactly one letter from the previous word.
  2. You may rearrange the letters. Their positions do not need to stay the same.
  3. Type your word or tap the on-screen keyboard, then press Enter to check it.
  4. Fill the rows between the start and end words. Your final entered word must also differ from the end word by exactly one letter.

Rearranging the same letters without replacing one does not count as a move. The start and end words are already filled in; you enter the words between them.

A worked example: CAULK to HORSE

This ladder connects the two words in four intermediate steps. Notice how the letters move when HACKS becomes SHAKE.

  1. CAULKThe start word.
  2. LACKSReplace U with S and rearrange.
  3. HACKSReplace L with H.
  4. SHAKEReplace C with E and rearrange.
  5. SHAREReplace K with R.
  6. HORSESHARE connects to the end word by replacing A with O and rearranging.

Normal mode and hard mode

Normal mode lets you use letters that are not in the start or end word. The board begins with four intermediate rows and can grow if you need more steps.

Hard mode keeps those four intermediate rows. Use only letters from the start and end words, adding exactly one more end-word letter in each row. The example above works in hard mode too.

Blue tiles mark letters from the start word, orange tiles mark letters from the end word, and neutral tiles mark other letters.
